Safari Photography Tips: Capturing the Wild.

“Shoot the Story of Africa with Lucky Moon Adventure Company”

A safari is more than just a trip it’s a visual journey through some of the most stunning and dramatic landscapes on Earth. At Lucky Moon Adventure Company, we know that capturing those once-in-a-lifetime moments is part of what makes your adventure unforgettable.

Whether you’re using a smartphone or a high-end DSLR, these safari photography tips will help you return home with images that truly tell the story of the wild.

1. Know Your Gear Before You Go

Fumbling with camera settings while a lion yawns in golden light? That’s a missed shot. Practice using your camera at home learn how to adjust focus, shutter speed, ISO, and zoom quickly and instinctively.

  • DSLR or mirrorless? Bring a zoom lens (200–400mm is ideal).
  • Smartphone photographer? Use burst mode, grid lines, and turn off the flash.

2. Light Is Everything

The best times for photography are early morning and late afternoon—when the light is soft, golden, and dramatic.

Avoid harsh midday light when possible, or shoot in black and white to turn contrast into a creative asset.

3. Think Beyond the Close-Up

It’s tempting to zoom in tight on animals but some of the most powerful images show context. Try wide shots that include the surrounding landscape: acacia trees, dusty trails, or distant mountains.

Let your photo tell a story, not just show a subject.

4. Patience = Perfect Shot

Wildlife doesn’t pose. Stay calm, be still, and wait. Moments like a mother grooming her cub or a giraffe silhouetted against the setting sun reward those who wait quietly.

Use continuous or burst mode for action scenes like a cheetah sprint or a bird taking flight.

5. Focus on the Eyes

Eyes connect the viewer to the animal. If the eyes are sharp and well-lit, the photo will feel alive even if the rest of the shot isn’t perfect. Use your autofocus settings wisely, or manually focus when needed.

6. Be Ready—Always

Nature is unpredictable. Keep your camera close and settings ready. Ask our guides for a heads-up if they sense something about to happen, they often do!

7. Respect the Wildlife
We believe in ethical photography. Never pressure guides to get closer than is safe or respectful. A true wildlife moment is one where the animal is undisturbed and free.

Remember: sometimes not taking the shot is the right decision.

8. Don’t Forget Backup & Storage

You’ll shoot a lot of photos—more than you think. Bring:

  • Extra memory cards
  • Backup batteries or power banks
  • A hard drive or cloud option for daily backups

9. Editing Can Elevate

Basic edits can bring out the best in your images. Boost shadows, adjust contrast, or fine-tune color. Apps like Lightroom Mobile, Snapseed, or desktop editors can turn a good photo into a great one.

10. Ask Our Guides for Help

Our expert guides are not only wildlife trackers they know where and how to position the vehicle for the best light, angle, and shot. Don’t hesitate to tell them what you’re hoping to capture!
