6 Days Marangu Route

5/10

Tour Overview

The 6 days Marangu route is the second most popular route and cheapest one to reach the top of Kilimanjaro. It is the only route that uses the same trail to ascend and descend and offers hut accommodation (camping is not allowed). This route, nicknamed the “Coca-Cola” route, has a reputation for being one of the easiest paths on the mountain. It certainly is the shortest Kilimanjaro route, yet it gives climbers less time to acclimatize and clarifies the lower success rate. Marangu is, unfortunately, less scenic than other routes and can be crowded during the peak season.

Arrival in Tanzania – Welcome to Moshi

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), a Lucky Moon Adventure representative will greet you and transfer you to your hotel in Moshi, the base town for Kilimanjaro treks. In the evening, meet your mountain guide for a full briefing, final gear check, and preparations for the days ahead.

Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

Elevation: 1,870 m to 2,700 m (6,135 ft to 8,858 ft)
Distance: 8 km / 5 miles
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours

After breakfast, we drive to Marangu Gate for registration and permit processing. Your trek begins in the lush rainforest, where you may spot exotic birds and Colobus monkeys. After 4 to 5 hours of gentle hiking, you’ll arrive at Mandara Hut, nestled in a clearing near the edge of the forest. In the afternoon, take a short walk to Maundi Crater for panoramic views of northern Tanzania and Kenya.

Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

Elevation: 2,700 m to 3,720 m (8,858 ft to 12,205 ft)
Distance: 12 km / 7.5 miles
Hiking Time: 6–8 hours

The trail ascends steadily through a scenic transition zone from rainforest to moorland, marked by giant heathers and volcanic rock formations. Today’s trek provides wide views of the Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. You’ll arrive at Horombo Hut in the afternoon, where you’ll rest, hydrate, and enjoy the peaceful high-altitude environment.

Day 3: Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut

Elevation Gain: Up to 4,000 m (13,123 ft) – Optional Hike
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours (optional)

This is a critical acclimatization day to help your body adjust to the high altitude. You can take a short hike toward Mawenzi Ridge for incredible views and to promote acclimatization. Afterward, return to Horombo Hut for rest and preparation for the summit push.

Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

Elevation: 3,720 m to 4,700 m (12,205 ft to 15,419 ft)
Distance: 10 km / 6 miles
Hiking Time: 5–7 hours

Today you traverse the alpine desert zone, crossing the Saddle—a wide, barren plateau between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The landscape becomes stark and dramatic as you make your way to Kibo Hut, the base camp for your summit attempt. After an early dinner, get some sleep to prepare for the midnight ascent.

Day 5: Summit Day – Uhuru Peak & Descent to Horombo Hut

Elevation: 4,700 m to 5,895 m (15,419 ft to 19,341 ft) then down to 3,720 m (12,205 ft)
Distance: 6 km ascent + 16 km descent (14 miles total)
Hiking Time: 12–16 hours

The summit push begins at midnight. Hike by headlamp up steep switchbacks to Gilman’s Point (5,685 m), arriving in time for a breathtaking sunrise. From there, continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak—the highest point in Africa.

Celebrate your achievement, take photos, and then begin your descent back to Kibo Hut for a short rest. Continue down to Horombo Hut, where you’ll spend your final night on the mountain.

Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate – Return to Moshi

Elevation: 3,720 m to 1,870 m (12,205 ft to 6,135 ft)
Distance: 20 km / 12 miles
Hiking Time: 5–7 hours

After breakfast, descend through the lush rainforest trail to Marangu Gate. Once at the gate, you’ll receive your summit certificate and meet your driver for the transfer back to Moshi. Spend the evening relaxing and enjoying a celebratory dinner with your guides.
